DANIELA ANDRADE AYAYAI

Introducing Daniela Andrade, the Honduran-Canadian musician who joins the ranks of contemporary artists celebrating their multilingual identities. Undeniably, Spanish languages in particular are having a global renaissance currently within the music world, with these Romantic dialects making their way onto our radio stations and playlists more often than ever. ‘Ayayai’, the latest song from Andrade, is a sultry-yet-mellow affair with inflections of soul and syrupy electronica. Even for non-Spanish speakers, you’ll be familiar with the expression “ayayai”, often used as a point of dismay, frustration or confusion, but for this artist who views no bounds in her musical style, she also has her own interpretation of this classic phrase. As Andrade explains, “This expression has always been difficult to translate for me as it can be used in different senses. For this song, I wanted to portray that feeling of when you look at someone across a room and play out how things may go down.” Paired with the sumptuously produced track, there’s an ingeniously simple video that makes plentiful use of a webcam, photo bursts and back-lit silhouettes to showcase the stylish Andrade, her placid expressions and mane of onyx hair. Look out for the highly anticipated Tamale EP slated for release on October 25th. - Hannah Thacker
